Opportunity Types & Referral Sources

Last updated: February 24, 2026

Overview

Every opportunity/candidate has a designated type and source.

An opportunity’s 'type' indicates how the opportunity was generated.

A referral’s 'source' indicates whether the person who made the referral is a member of the community they submitted a referral to.

Opportunity Types

Direct Referral

Is an opportunity that is sent to a specific person via a referral form.

General Referral

A general referral occurs when someone is sent a referral through a referral form without the referral provider specifying a particular job opening or position. General referrals are considered a sub-type of direct referral due to the fact that they are sent via a referral form to a specific contact.

General referrals can only be submitted to an organization if they have enabled the general referral feature.

Social Referral

Is an opportunity that is generated via a link and/or a social media post. A social referral is a specific opening that is shared but not necessarily with a specific person.

Direct Application

Is an opportunity where the candidate applied directly, without a referral.

Referral Sources

Internal Referral

Is a referral that is sent by someone who is a member of the referral community they are referring to.

External Referral

Is a referral that is sent by someone who is not a member of the referral community they are referring to.
